Wan Ton Mee for those who love Big Prawns

Food Rating           :           4 stars
Quality of Food      :           4 stars
Kopi O Rating        :          3 stars
Ambience               :          Regular coffee shop

Lunch till Tea Time

Right at the junction of Macalister Road and Lorong Selamat, it is pretty difficult for you to get a parking space, so maybe you should just park a little further and walk a bit.  For those who enjoy wan ton mee with big prawns in the wan ton, this is the place for you.  This is the closest you can get compared to the prawn dumplings in Hong Kong.

Soup stock is made from plenty of ingredients to make sure it is sweet and tasty

In addition to the large wan ton you can also order the sui kow

RM 4.00 is pretty good price for prawn dumpling lovers
They are all hidden underneath the noodle

Foodie's Choice - Dry Won Ton Mee original with lots of green chilli
However, it will be wiser to try the soup version as the soup is pretty 'sweet' from the long time boiling of the large bones (tua kut) and flat fish.  It is personal though, whether you like it wet or dry, maybe you should try both versions.
Kopi O is RM 1.00
Drinks here are a little on the pricey side
No choice

This coffee shop is crowded most of the time from lunch till dinner, there are plenty of other selections especially during dinner ...

If you are working in the mainland or living there, then I guess you can go there any day.   But for me,  weekend will be the best to beat the jam.  Start your journey around 6pm, arrive at 630 to 7pm when there is no crowd yet and enjoy ...
You get to choose from a choice of 3 soup bases clear soup, tomyam or yam soup

Pork balls and fish balls all taste good.
Fish and crabs are all fresh, fresh, fresh.
Really good value for money.

All these is the RM 100 set, check out the crabs with roe

Free flow of garlic oil, chilli sauce and little chillis

This is a teow chiu delicacy, side order made of brown sugar and yam.
Must order !  The meal is not complete without it.

Foodie's choice - Yam dessert above with beer
Steam boat - yam base soup is highly recommended

Foodie's tipMust go early to beat the jam
Never try weekdays, you will be stuck on the bridge

The place becomes more and more crowded as it gets later

Ban Chang Kueh Memories Rekindled

Food Quality 5 stars !
Ambience 5 stars !
Value for Money 5 stars !
Kopi O Rating not applicable - road side

Breakfast Only

While walking along the Kuala Kangsar market on a public holiday hunting for good street food, I bumped into a Ban Chang Kueh stall at the junction of Jalan Kuala Kangsar and Kimberley Street.
I am not a person with a sweet tooth so these stalls normally don't attract me, until I saw the framed up photo below.

As I checked out the stall, and what the long queue was all about, my eye caught a glimpse of the wafer like ban chang kueh, suddenly I became excited and joined the long wait.

I remembered as a kid, I used to follow my mum to the market and very often, I will be treated with this crispy like thing which I love.  I have been looking high and low for it since and every ban chang kueh stall I have seen does not sell the crispy thin version.

I waited till there was no more people waiting and I asked the friendly aunty if she used to sell opposite, and she said, yes, for more than 30 years already ...
I have finally found the stall that I have been looking for all this while :-)

There are 3 versions of ban chang kueh sold here - super thin crispy, normal fold over and the thick version

Foodie's Choice - Super thin crispy and normal foldover with peanuts, corn and brown sugar

goes super well with kopi O at nearby coffee shop

Old couple at work with a clientele for more than 30 years

Every bite of it was a moment down memory lane for me ...

Foodie's Best in Penang List - Lor Mee at Ah Quee Street

Food Rating                :            5 stars
Kopi O Rating            :            5 stars
Value for Money        :            5 stars
Ambience                    :            5 stars

Breakfast Only
Closed on Sundays

This place has got to be the feature of the week.  Brings back much memory everytime I eat this Lor Mee.  I think it has been more than 20 years now  ...

Initially this stall was manned by a husband and wife team and they used to sell at Lam Ah coffee shop, the shop at the junction of Chulia Street and Beach Street opposite the fire station.

The old man selling always had a 'good morning' towel ban over his forehead and he remebers every one of his customers order pretty well.  Thay then moved to Lean Thye coffee shop at Lebuh Ah Quee, being the solo stall there.  Business was good as usual.  Unfortunately, they were struck by health issues and had to sell the stall.  Thankfully for us, this old man passed down his recipe to the current talented young man who is doing good to the Lor Mee industry.

The bowl of Lor Mee he makes taste exactly the same as the one the good old man used to make.  And this guy also has a pretty good memory of your orders.

Team of 2 brothers and the mum, older brother is currently training the younger one up.
If you look carefully at the photo, and if you are a Penang street food die hard, you can recognise that this guy sells a different thing at a different stall at night somewhere in town.
Make a guess ... another popular venue ...

Chilli and garlic as much as you wish

Foodie's Choice - Small Bowl add Meat RM 4.00
