Penang Street Painting & Wire Art Cycling Excursion

This post is a special edition dedicated to Penang.
Every tourist, local or foreign should have a go at this one.
It is really well worth you time.
Nice street art to watch.
Have to give credit to this idea of making the 'old town' more lively on Sunday.
Foodie's suggestion - start early and have plenty of coffee stops.
Ok maybe eating stops.
Ha ha ...

For more photos ... click here ...

So, all Foodie excursions must involve food.
Before kicking off ... we had Hokkien Prawn Mee at Armenian Street ...
This is supposed a popular venue for Hokkien Mee ... home made ...
Found it rather ordinary, nothing special ... but good enough to fill the stomach for an exciting long day :-)
Kopi O was also Ok

Here they also serve pao and nasi lemak.
All at a very reasonable price.

After breakfast, you can pay a visit opposite.
An artistic temple right at the junction of Armenian Street.
Keep a look out for all the activities they are having at this part of town.

So as we cycle along the streets of the old town, we got a little hungry and decided to stop for a 2nd breakfast and also have a Kopi O boost.
This newly opened cafe - Big Ben Georgetown @ Bishop Street, serves local coffee with simple breakfast.
The Big Ben set was pretty ok.
Sorry I forgot to take a photo of the big breakfast cause it was too ordinary and by the time I remember only the baked beans left on the place ...
Wakakakaka ....
Still new though ... so we are waiting for more things that they can offer...

After a little bit more of cycling ... we decided to call it a day ...
But the food part does not end there

We went for lunch at the Best Bak Moy - Hon Kee

followed by the Best Ice Kacang at New World Park
and then to call it a day ...

The Best Mee Goreng at Tanjung Bungah (yet to be reviewed in this blog)
Boy ... all done on a Beautiful Sunday!

Feel free to copy this agenda if you decide to go cycling round Heritage Penang :-)

Hainan Chicken Rice - Goh Thew Chik

This is one of the best in town :-)
Hidden in the hustle bustle of Chulia Street.
The saying goes ... just go to the one with the most people ...
Well, there you go.
Never go wrong.
This is no herd mentality.
The chicken rice is really good.
It has successfully made itself on the 'Cheap & Good' list.
If you are a tourist, even better.
Walk around the area ... lots of old town to see
The row of shops are unique and if you look harder, you can find a rattan shop making hand made goodies, also loads of budget and heritage hotels ... coffee places to chill
You will like it ... this part of town is very Penang :-)

Just check out the spare parts.
This is the chicken intestines.
Super tasty ...
You can also ask for gizzard and heart and liver ...
Chili sauce also tastes great
I don't need to say anything more, loads and loads of review of this place when you google it

Old Style Duck Meat Koay Teow Thing & Koay Chap @ Lebuh Melayu

If you are craving for the traditional style Koay Teow Thing with clear soup and soup base tasting of duck meat, here is the place to be.
It used to be along Carnavon Street, main road, but they upgraded a few years ago into their own shop lot at Lebuh Melayu.
So, do make sure you don't go to the wrong one, as there is another Koay Teow Thing stall along Carnavon street now...

This is the chef at work.
He has superb memory and can remember your orders if you are a regular.
He has been doing this since he was a kid, and I know this cause as a kid I have been one of his faithful customers :-)

Kopi O here is very strong so make sure you don't drink it with an empty stomach.

Specialties include the crunchy duck intestines, the duck meat on the side, duck head, gizzard and all other spare parts... you name it he has got it ...

Well, the beauty of this venue is the boss is super hard working.
So, he sells Koay Teow Thing for breakfast and then follows on with Koay Chap for lunch.
If you are a glutton like me, you could go a little late and try both at the same time.
If you are an 'intestine' sort of person, this is the place for you.
Just check out the plate above, you can even request if you want the upper or lower intestines.
The tau kuah is also yummy with the juices all seep into the tau kuah, as you bite it you can taste the goodness in you mouth.  This is a MUST try.

Well, if you are not a fan of either the above, no worries, you still can order stuff from the coffee shop round the corner, they have one of the best Char Koay Teow and among other things include Lor Mee and Wan Ton Mee, so you won't be left out ...

Have you ever visited an outlet where you keep frequenting because of the owner ?
This is the place.
The owner 'Ah Hong' will recognize every single one of his patrons by name and occupation.
He knows who he can joke with and who he can't.
He handles each customers on the customer's personality and temperament.
He is witty and fast and efficient and best part is he is humorous.  He is also caring.
He even sends a bouquet of flowers to his regular, faithful customers during their wake...
Can you beat that?
Ok, let us talk about the food then ...

My family has been to this place for 4 generations now and still going.  Ah Hong knows the whole family and everyone's occupation.
Above is the Hainanese chicken chop - must order
Only this place can cook it this way

This is the pork with pork liver in dark soya sauce
Also must order, you can only find the authentic taste here

You have a choice for soups
Salted Veg with Duck Soup
OR
Taufu and Salted Fish Soup and Pig's Stomach

Seaweed Soup not that nice though
Stick to the two in bold, you can't go wrong, owner more than happy to add soup for you

Ambience here scores a 5!!!
If you are a person who wants to see the heritage part of Penang make sure you visit this place
This is  Dumb Waiter
Sends food up to the 2nd floor

The chefs are also heritage age
Don't be fooled though, they are super efficient
Best part is even when there are loads of customers outside, the kitchen runs smoothly, no one raising their voices, everyone knows what to do

Heritage ambience, heritage chefs, heritage customers :-)
Everything heritage

Large selection of dishes here
Frequently order includes the fish curry - sauce is nice, fish a little expensive, kerabu chicken leg, salted fish  with pork, fried fu yoong egg, hainanese fried noodle ... etc

Foodie's Choice :
Salted Fish with Pig's Stomach Soup (unlimited refill of soup)
Chicken Chop
Pork slices with thick soya sauce

After your heritage lunch, don't forget to take a walk along Chulia Street and visit some heritage hotels.
If you are a tourist, this is a place worth your time dropping by.
If you are a local, you can get free PR tips while having your meal :-)
Have fun !
