It is really well worth you time.

Have to give credit to this idea of making the 'old town' more lively on Sunday.

Foodie's suggestion - start early and have plenty of coffee stops.

Ok maybe eating stops.

So, all Foodie excursions must involve food.

Before kicking off ... we had Hokkien Prawn Mee at Armenian Street ...

This is supposed a popular venue for Hokkien Mee ... home made ...

Found it rather ordinary, nothing special ... but good enough to fill the stomach for an exciting long day :-)

Kopi O was also Ok

 Here they also serve pao and nasi lemak.

All at a very reasonable price.

 After breakfast, you can pay a visit opposite.

An artistic temple right at the junction of Armenian Street.

 Keep a look out for all the activities they are having at this part of town.

 So as we cycle along the streets of the old town, we got a little hungry and decided to stop for a 2nd breakfast and also have a Kopi O boost.

This newly opened cafe - Big Ben Georgetown @ Bishop Street, serves local coffee with simple breakfast.

The Big Ben set was pretty ok.

Sorry I forgot to take a photo of the big breakfast cause it was too ordinary and by the time I remember only the baked beans left on the place ...

Wakakakaka ....

Still new though ... so we are waiting for more things that they can offer...

 After a little bit more of cycling ... we decided to call it a day ...

But the food part does not end there

This Bak Moy is still on Foodie's Best List
An update, they have recently moved a few stalls now to the centre of Kampung Malabar, same road ...
Look for a stretch of 3 shop lots with traditional chinese decor
It's nice and clean now and the Loh Bak man has also joined this place, the one existing still at the old stall, still belongs to him.
Bak Moy increase by 50 cents, reasonable.
Drinks however have gone up rather steeply.
But with the current venue, guess it is worth 30 cents more, since you do not need to sit by the alley and watch cockroaches and rats while waiting for you meal.
They are now open from 9am onwards till dinner.
So you could have this for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Penang's Best Bak Moy (Pork Soup)

The best time to visit this place is NOW.  The Chinese are having the 9th Emperor Celebration (9 wong yeh) and a large number of taoist in Penang are vegetarians for 9 days.
I went to have my porky fix on the 1st day and was pleasantly surprise as I only waited 5 minutes :-)

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

There are 3 cooks now.  Started off with this man's dad and he took over.  Business became better and now there are 3 stoves, lady (photo below) is his sister.
If you pass by here during lunch time, you can see the boss (above) preparing the soup for the base.
Very pleasant and humble guy, the best part is he remembers your orders even if you have not been there for a while.

Foodie's tip - Always order from the boss, most tasty ...

This is Foodie's choice - Pork and Pig's Heart with thick vermicelli
Regular is RM 5.50 but if you add stuff like mine RM 7.50

You can have a choice of porridge (moey) of congee (chuk) and add stuff like pig's heart, brain, kidneys or even break in an egg.

with my regular drink of RM 1.00

You have a choice of 2 coffee shops nearby that you can patronise, both are quite similar, hygiene is not great, but what to do if you want to have the best in Penang Bak Moy, have to suck it up...

Foodie's Tip - whatever you do NEVER sit in the alley between the 2 coffee shops, I assure you, you will lose your apetite no matter how good the food is.

So, where is this Kampung Malabar?  One of the side roads along Penang Road. Kampung Malabar, Penang.  Google Map GPS : 5.419335,100.33225

If you have guests and have no time hopping for street food this is a good pit stop.  Or you are a tourist passing by and wish to have a taste of everything.
  

This is Part 1 of "Treasures of Kampung Malabar".  You can have brunch or lunch here and then come back in the evening for dinner or supper.  Dinner or supper varieties are totally different.

I grown up here and literally see these people looking older and older as their food becomes tastier and tastier. 

So, lets start with the chicken rice here.  It is cooked by a Hainanese

chicken rice chef with years of experience.  Try the rice, so fragrant.

This is one of the many hainan chicken rice stalls available.

At 1.30pm most of the chicken is gone ...

Spare parts anyone - gizzard, liver and heart

Rarely you can find these homemade chinese sausages these days

Make sure you don't miss this one.  If you are too full after trying the other stuff, don't worry he is still around during dinner time.

Must try the deep fried yam and prawn fritters.

My all time favourite has to be the taiwan sausages, ok this one is nothing special ....

Seriously, you don't need to pay RM8 for a plate of Char Kuay Teow, this one is RM 3.50 with 3 large prawns.  Taste good, of course I have the best in mind, I will feature in another post, and 'no' it is not the one I heard you thinking in your head.

Beef balls by Ang Ku Chai also taste delicious.  He used to have the beef tendon balls many years back ...

This is one thing I don't like about this coffee shop, if you don't order drinks they will charge you 40 cents, ridiculous or what!  The 'kopi o peng' boleh tahan ... not great, when you come at night go to the neighbouring coffee shop, it is a little bit cleaner, just a teeny weeny bit though.
