Best Stuffed Fish - Nasi Melayu / Malay Rice @ Jalan Macalister

Macalister Road is a very long road.
So look for Rangoon Road.
This Nasi Melayu is located at the junction of Macalister Road and Rangoon Road,
at Kedai Kopi Sea Horse
It serves the BEST stuffed fish.
With loads of onions inside, super tasty.

You can eat here during breakfast or lunch.
Closed on Fridays.
Super friendly BOSS :-)
Best time to be here is around 12 noon, where all the food is out and still there are good portions available ...
Come at one, most yummy stuff will be gone ...

Only disadvantage of this place is the coffee shop.
The coffee is not too bad, but since the turn of the new year ...
They have implemented the rule that every customer must order a drink otherwise they will be charged 50 cents.
The coffee woman ie the lady boss, pressures you to order a drink.
Even if you have a large company and others have ordered drinks ... she will INSIST !
It gets really irritating.
By the way, the price of drinks on the above photo is an old price list ...
This coffee shop is now one of the higher charging ones :-(
Best is to ta pao ... :-p
Anyway, let us not forgo such a tasty Nasi Melayu stall just because of the coffee shop ...
The stuffed fish is a MUST have !!!

Is Inflation Hitting Penang Street Food ?

This post is intended to get some feedback from Foodie's fans living in Penang.

Recent visit to a chicken rice stall at Macalister Road :

Sin Nam Huat Roasted Chicken & Duck Rice

took me by surprise.

With the intention of a quick late lunch, I decided to have Chicken Rice - Drum Stick (just the drum side was served not inclusive of the thigh) with a small rice.

Guess how much ?  RM 4.60

Is it expensive or Is this reasonable ?

Down the road just round the corner, there is another stall selling chicken rice - whole drumstick (drum plus thigh) with rice and some spare parts (chicken heart and gizzard) ...

Guess how much ? RM 5.50

Why the difference ?

Any takers for this ?

Wan Ton Mee for those who love Big Prawns

Food Rating           :           4 stars
Quality of Food      :           4 stars
Kopi O Rating        :          3 stars
Ambience               :          Regular coffee shop

Lunch till Tea Time

Right at the junction of Macalister Road and Lorong Selamat, it is pretty difficult for you to get a parking space, so maybe you should just park a little further and walk a bit.  For those who enjoy wan ton mee with big prawns in the wan ton, this is the place for you.  This is the closest you can get compared to the prawn dumplings in Hong Kong.

Soup stock is made from plenty of ingredients to make sure it is sweet and tasty

In addition to the large wan ton you can also order the sui kow

RM 4.00 is pretty good price for prawn dumpling lovers
They are all hidden underneath the noodle

Foodie's Choice - Dry Won Ton Mee original with lots of green chilli
However, it will be wiser to try the soup version as the soup is pretty 'sweet' from the long time boiling of the large bones (tua kut) and flat fish.  It is personal though, whether you like it wet or dry, maybe you should try both versions.
Kopi O is RM 1.00
Drinks here are a little on the pricey side
No choice

This coffee shop is crowded most of the time from lunch till dinner, there are plenty of other selections especially during dinner ...

Ah Lim Birthday Mee since 2001

Food Rating             :      4.0/5.0  stars
Kopi O Rating         :      3.5/5.0 stars
Ambience                 :      Dirty, old a little heritage
Value for Money     :      4.0/5.0

If you are a fan of Lam Mee then this one you must try.  It is situated at Macalister Road, just opposite the junction of Abu Siti Lane and Macalister Road.  Only recently, 15-8-2012, the couple has moved to this food court called Pinang Delicious Food Court.  Food court is closed on Fridays.  Plenty of carparks available at the back.
Please do NOT go to the WRONG one at the corner round the bend, Ah Seng Fu Kui Mee, which is the imitation version.

Look at the queue on a Saturday morning.  Open from 830am till noon, when soup has finished they call it a day.

Husband and wife couple works very efficiently together.
As the saying goes, there are many ways to skin a cat, thus, also the same principle applies to the many ways you can eat your birthday mee.
Of the many ways I have observed, here are the 2 common ones :
  • pour all your sambal over the noodle and mix mix mix
  • take your sambal bit by bit as you savour the noodles
both ways are as yummy

Add fish ball RM 4.50

Normal portion RM 3.50
 BEFORE

 AFTER

Penang Foodie's Suggestion :
Best on an early morning rainy day ... add fish ball ... down together with a cup of local kopi o = satisfaction
